Fields Without Fences

Frenchtown, NJ · Hunterdon County

Certified organic forest garden farm specializing in native and medicinal species, with American Elderberry as their primary crop.

Fields Without Fences is a certified organic forest garden farm in Kingwood Township, just outside Frenchtown, within the Delaware River watershed. They grow fruits, nuts, medicinal herbs, and wild edibles in naturalized plantings inspired by wild ecology.

In 2011 they moved onto a 10-acre plot of worn-out, waterlogged farmland. Drawing on ecological restoration, forest gardening, indigenous land management, and permaculture, they transformed it into an abundant forest garden of nut trees, berry bushes, medicinal herbs, and a network of ponds. The farm has since grown to include a 35-acre site down the road.

Beyond their fields, they offer permaculture design and agroecology consulting, plus tours, workshops, and courses, partnering with NOFA-NJ, Pasa, Duke Farms, and The American Herb Society.
